Since this is my first River’s Edge blog post, I figured, why not make it about me! I have been at River’s Edge Veterinary Hospital (REVH) for about 7 months now and it has been an amazing experience! I grew up right across the Ohio River in Paducah, Kentucky. I knew I wanted to be a veterinarian since 7th grade career day, when a veterinarian came and told us what the profession was all about, and I literally set my life plan in motion that day. A few years later I started attending Heath High School where I was an avid member of the Academic Team (you will find out, I’m a huge nerd!), participated in French Club, and worked at Office Max as an electronics sales associate and Rolling Hills Country Club as lifeguard. In the fall of 2004 I started my undergraduate work at Murray State University where I majored in Pre-Veterinary Medicine and minored in Chemistry. During the fall of 2007 I joined a study abroad program in the southern region of Germany, called Bavaria, in the city of Regensburg. I lived downtown in a building built in the 1200’s and went to “Uni” (slang German for University). I didn’t have any veterinary classes while I was abroad, but living in a foreign country helped me prepare for my future time in veterinary school! In the fall of 2009 I started the class work portion of veterinary school at Ross University on the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies. I was a full fledged “local” of St. Kitts for two years and 4 months while I was completing 7 semesters of course work, tests, laboratories, and working closely with dogs, cats, sheep, horses, cattle, and donkeys. Upon completion of my didactic education, I moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to complete my clinical year of school at Louisiana State University. There I had many different rotations including small animal medicine, small animal soft tissue surgery, small animal orthopedic surgery, diagnostic imaging, shelter medicine, pathology, equine medicine and surgery, and a spay/neuter surgery rotation, and many more. It was a challenging and demanding year, but I left there in January of 2013, ready to grab the bull by the horns, as it were, and started the hunt for a job. I decided to move back to Paducah while looking for a job so that I could save a little money to buy a home. In March of 2013 I was blanketing the Western Kentucky and Western Tennessee areas with resumes with no luck, when I just had the idea to try Metropolis, as it is very close to Paducah. The rest, as you know, is history. Dr. Karla took a big chance and hired me temporarily to see if our styles and personalities could mesh, and did they ever. I LOVE working here, we, (the techs, assistants, and receptionists) are a family and have a great time working together and providing the best care we can for you and your pet. I hope you have enjoyed getting to know a little bit about me and hope you tune in for my next blog post. Take care!
